EUPHEMISM AND DYSPHEMISM IN MEDICAL DISCOURSE: THEORETICAL BOUNDARIES, CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA, AND PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS

The article examines euphemistic and dysphemistic strategies of disease naming in medical discourse from a theoretical and pragmatic perspective. The concepts of euphemism, dysphemism, taboo, stigma, and linguistic politeness are analyzed in their interrelated framework. Classification criteria are proposed for official clinical protocols, open-access medical sources, as well as digital discourses such as Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp. The analysis reveals that euphemism mitigates communicative risk, whereas dysphemism may transform the patient’s identity into a stigmatized evaluation.
