MYTHOPOETICS AND BUDDHIST CODES IN THE NOVEL «CHAPAEV AND PUSTOTA» BY VIKTOR PELEVIN

The article examines the mythopoetic and Buddhist components of V.O.Pelevin’s novel «Chapaev and Pustota» as interacting layers of meaning. The study traces the double coding of the narration, where postmodernist play with the Soviet myth of the Red Commander combines with the Zen and Daoist concept of emptiness. Analysis is centred on the figure of Chapaev as bodhisattva, the concept of Inner Mongolia and the mirror pair of characters Pyotr Pustota and Chapaev. Structural-semiotic, mythopoetic, comparative-historical and hermeneutic methods are applied.
