EMOTIONAL-EXPRESSIVE LAYER OF INTONATION CONTOURS: A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF IRONY AND DOUBT

This article presents a comparative-contrastive analysis of the emotional-expressive layer of intonation contours within English and Uzbek literary and cinematic discourse. The study examines the pragmatic functions of prosodic features—such as pitch direction, logical stress, emphatic pauses, and elongation—in rendering speech acts of irony, sarcasm, and mock praise. Based on the analyzed cinematic data, it is demonstrated that while English irony predominantly relies on tone suppression and understatement (deadpan expression), Uzbek sarcasm utilizes pitch range expansion, modal particles, and emphatic elongation of both vowels and consonants (gemination). The findings offer significant insights into the fields of contrastive linguistics and phonopragmatics.
