SEMANTICS OF ENGLISH MODAL VERBS AND THEIR EQUIVALENTS IN THE UZBEK LANGUAGE

This article presents a comparative-typological analysis of the semantic features of English modal verbs and their Uzbek equivalents. The universality of the modality category is examined based on the theoretical frameworks of foreign scholars (Von Wright, Palmer, Lyons) and local linguistic research (Jo'rayeva, Qilichev). Structural similarities and differences in the grammatical systems of English and Uzbek, as well as equivalence challenges in the translation process, are analysed through literary examples drawn from Carroll, Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, and G'afur G'ulom. The findings clearly demonstrate semantic parallelisms and divergences in the modal systems of both languages regarding grammatical expression.
