THE ISSUE OF SYNONYMIC CHOICE IN THE UZBEK TRANSLATION OF MODAL UNITS USED IN UN DOCUMENTS

This article examines linguistic and translational issues related to rendering English legal modal units into Uzbek. Particular attention is paid to the semantic and pragmatic features of the modal verbs “shall”, “must”, and “may”, frequently used in United Nations documents, as well as to their synonymous Uzbek equivalents. The study analyzes the normative force of modal units, their role in expressing legal precision, and the problem of selecting adequate equivalents in translation. The article substantiates the importance of maintaining terminological consistency in the translation of legal discourse.
