CLASSIFICATION OF DIFFERENTIAL FORMS IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

This article examines the classification of differential forms in Russian as an important aspect of the study of linguistic variation. It explores the contrasts between modern and obsolete, literary and dialectal, literary and colloquial, and literary and professional differential forms, reflecting the etymological, territorial, social, and functional differentiation of the language. The research material was drawn from explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language edited by D.N. Ushakov and S.A. Kuznetsov, as well as works of classical Russian literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. The examples provided from dictionaries and literary texts demonstrate the dependence of the choice of linguistic forms on the communicative situation, social environment, professional sphere, and territorial affiliation of Russian speakers in different historical periods of society's development. A specific example demonstrates the difference in the word-formation potential of literary forms from differential ones. Particular attention is paid to the role of these forms in preserving lexical variation and the evolution of language.
