METAPHOR AND SIMILE IN THE SYSTEM OF LINGUISTIC TROPES: THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS AND HISTORY OF RESEARCH

The article examines the concept of trope in modern linguistics and reveals the specific features of metaphor and simile as the main expressive and figurative means of language. Special attention is paid to the historical development of views on metaphor and simile in both national and foreign scholarly traditions. The article analyzes the ancient origins of the theory of tropes, the rhetorical and stylistic approach, the semantic interpretation of metaphor, as well as the cognitive approach, within which metaphor is understood not only as a means of artistic expressiveness but also as a universal mechanism of conceptualizing reality. The article substantiates the idea that metaphor and simile share a common basis — the relation of similarity — yet differ in their structural organization, degree of explicitness, and mode of semantic transformation.
