MYTHICAL IMAGES IN FAIRY TALES

This article examines mythical figures presented in Russian folk tales. The key characters—Baba Yaga, Koschei the Immortal, the Firebird, Leshy, Vodianoy, and others—are analyzed in terms of their mythological origins, narrative functions, and cultural-symbolic significance. Special attention is paid to the connection of these figures with ancient Slavic pagan beliefs and their transformation within the context of oral folk creativity. The article is comprehensive in nature and relies on comparative-historical, structural-semiotic, and cultural studies methods. The results of the study indicate that the mythical characters of Russian fairy tales reflect an archaic worldview and serve important educational, aesthetic, and philosophical functions.
