DISCOURSE UNITS IN THE FOCUS OF MODERN LINGUISTIC RESEARCHES

This article provides an overview of contemporary linguistic research on discourse units—words and expressions that perform regulatory, connective, and metatextual functions in spoken and written communication. It examines the key criteria for identifying discourse markers, including procedural meaning, syntactic optionality, and metadiscursive orientation. A functional classification is presented, encompassing connectors, reasoning markers, indicators of evidentiality and epistemic modality, stance markers, and interaction-regulating units. Particular attention is given to the comparative perspective through the analysis of Russian, English, and Uzbek discourse markers, highlighting both cross-linguistic equivalences and language-specific features. Using Uzbek as a case study, the article demonstrates how its agglutinative structure, grammaticalized evidentiality, and system of deictic particles influence the inventory and functioning of discourse units. The study also addresses theoretical debates, methodological shifts toward corpus-based analysis, and practical applications in language teaching, computational linguistics, and forensic linguistics.
