METHODS OF RENDERING NON-EQUIVALENT LEXIS IN CHOLPON’S UZBEK TRANSLATIONS OF RUSSIAN CLASSICS

The article examines the devices Cholpon used to render Russian non-equivalent lexis and realia when translating the classics into Uzbek. The material comprises his versions of Pushkin’s «Boris Godunov» and «Dubrovsky», Gogol’s «The Government Inspector», and Shakespeare’s «Hamlet», the latter produced through a Russian intermediary text. Transcription and transliteration, calque, descriptive translation, functional analogue, hyperonymic generalisation and omission are identified and described. The choice of device is shown to depend on the type of realia and on the translator’s commitment to preserving the national colour of the source.
