Abstract
The article examines the evolution of axiological dominants in A. P. Chekhov’s late works. The study aims to trace changes in the writer’s value orientations in his works of the 1890s and 1900s and to determine the nature of this evolution. Axiological, hermeneutic, historical-genetic, and comparative methods of analysis are employed. The study reveals that Chekhov’s late works demonstrate a shift in axiological emphasis from predominantly social criticism toward the affirmation of spiritual and existential values, above all the unconditional value of human life and authentic personal existence. It is argued that this evolution does not constitute a rupture but rather a deepening of the stable core of values underlying the writer’s artistic world.
