Abstract

This article provides a comparative study of the origin and semantic development of the ethnonym “Turk” based on Chinese, Sogdian, and Old Turkic written sources. It analyzes the earliest forms of the ethnonym, its pronunciation and spelling variants in different languages, as well as its semantic changes. The form “tu-jue” recorded in Chinese chronicles, “türk” found in Sogdian documents, and “türük” attested in Old Turkic runic inscriptions are compared to identify their common roots and distinctive features. The article evaluates scholarly hypotheses linking the ethnonym to such meanings as “power,” “strength,” “to create,” and “leader.” It also examines how the ethnonym changed according to regional and historical contexts.
