Abstract

The article examines the concepts of speech act and indirect speech act in terms of the relationship between grammatical form, illocutionary purpose, and communicative context. The study aims to systematize the criteria for identifying indirectness and to explain them through English–Uzbek models. The research employs conceptual analysis, theoretical synthesis, and contextual modeling. As a result, three analytical levels of the speech act are distinguished, a working definition of the indirect speech act is refined, and a procedure for examining the transition from grammatical form to contextual purpose is proposed. The study substantiates the need to distinguish indirectness from presupposition, implicature, and politeness. The listener’s understanding of the communicative intention is differentiated from the actual performance of the requested action. The examples provided are author-developed models designed to illustrate theoretical distinctions. The findings demonstrate the necessity of jointly considering grammatical form, communicative situation, alternative interpretations, and verbal responses in grammatical-pragmatic analysis.
