Abstract

This article provides a theoretical analysis of the psychological mechanisms involved in developing an individual’s interest in reading and transforming it into a sustained need for reading. The study aims to determine the role of intrinsic motivation, interest, autonomy, perceived competence, social support, emotional engagement, and metacognitive self-regulation in the development of reading motivation, as well as to systematize the psychological possibilities for improving these mechanisms. The study is based on integrative theoretical analysis, comparative analysis, content analysis of scholarly sources, and generalization. Along with local psychological and pedagogical literature, international studies on reading motivation, reading engagement, self-determination, interest development, and metacognitive regulation were analyzed. The findings indicate that sustained interest in reading depends less on one-time external incentives and more on the interaction between the stimulation of interest, opportunities for personal choice, experiences of success, socio-emotional support, and independent regulation of reading activities. The following stages in the development of reading motivation were identified: “triggering interest – stabilizing interest – internalizing reading as a value – transitioning to independent reading activity.”
