Abstract

This study investigates the use and distribution of relative clauses in contemporary English news discourse, with a particular focus on BBC News articles. Drawing on a corpus of 329 articles from seven major sections—Sport, Business, Innovation, Culture, Arts, Travel, and Earth—the study examines the frequency and structural variation of four types of relative clauses: who, which, that, and zero relatives. The relative clauses are further analyzed according to their syntactic configurations (SS, SO, OO, and OS), enabling both quantitative and qualitative comparisons across different journalistic sections. Particular attention is given to the distribution of restrictive relative clauses (RRCs) and non-restrictive relative clauses (NRRCs), as well as to the structural patterns in which these two types occur. The findings indicate that RRCs and NRRCs exhibit distinct structural patterns in BBC News discourse, reflecting differences in their syntactic and discourse functions.
