Abstract

The article analyzes the legitimation of national identity in the context of the relationship between symbolic power and institutional memory. Social acceptance is distinguished from normative justification. The study examines authority over the selection of symbols, the naming of historical events, and the revision of interpretations. Equal status, accountability for evidence-based justification, and the opportunity to raise objections are proposed as criteria for legitimacy.
