Nationally marked units are considered important language elements that reflect the relationship between language, culture, historical memory, and national worldview. These units include realia, phraseological expressions, ethnographic vocabulary, historical and cultural concepts, names of customs, traditions, and value-based notions. The study examines the capabilities of neural machine translation systems in preserving semantic content, cultural connotations, and pragmatic meaning. Special attention is paid to comparing machine translation outputs with human translation variants in order to identify cases of semantic reduction, cultural neutralization, and inaccurate transfer of national-cultural meaning. The findings indicate that neural translation systems may demonstrate a relatively high level of formal accuracy; however, they do not always ensure the adequate transmission of culturally specific meanings. Therefore, contextual analysis, explanatory translation, and an intercultural approach are essential for improving the translation quality of nationally marked units.2026-01-01Article
