Semiosis is a subject studied within the specialised science of signs and sign systems–semiotics. Presupposition can be understood as a component of a text’s content arising from relative knowledge, for which sufficient comprehension of the text is not required; it is usually expressed verbally. Such knowledge is called surface (background) knowledge.
