	bibo:abstract "This article presents a structural analysis of sentences in English notarial texts, focusing on their grammatical organization and communicative functions within legal discourse. The study applies two complementary approaches: formal-grammatical classification (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences) and functional analysis based on systemic-functional grammar (theme-rheme structure and clause types). Empirical data from a corpus of notarial documents—including notarial certificates, powers of attorney, wills, and certified copies—reveal that complex and compound-complex sentences dominate all genres (60–80% of all sentences), reflecting the need for logical precision and legal inclusiveness. Declarative sentences are found to be almost the only sentence type used, while interrogative and exclamatory sentences are virtually absent, underscoring the impersonal and objective nature of notarial discourse. The analysis of subordinate clauses shows that relative clauses (restrictive) and complement clauses (especially “that”-clauses after performative verbs) are most frequent, whereas adverbial clauses are considerably rarer due to their affective and subjective connotations. Non-finite (“to”-infinitive, “-ing” participle, “-ed” participle) constructions are identified as key devices for increasing informational density. Theme-rheme distribution typically places temporal-locative phrases or institutional subjects (e.g., “I, a Notary Public…”) in theme position, thereby reinforcing the evidential and attestation function of notarial documents."^^xsd:string;
