The Sophists preferred victory in debate to truth. Francis Bacon distinguished between secular and religious truth, a position that helps to defuse the tension between believers and non-believers. Religious truth is attained through faith, personal experience, and revelation, unlike scientific truth, which is based on empirical data and observation. For a believer, religious truth is absolute, above doubt and speculation.</dc:description>
