N2  - This article analyzes the nominative features of historical toponyms, the criteria for their formation, and their relationship with language, cognition, and culture. The role of toponyms in identifying geographical objects, as well as their historical, ethnic, and cultural significance, is examined. Particular attention is paid to such criteria for place-name formation as motivation, topographic relevance, systematicity, grammatical appropriateness, and functional convenience. The findings demonstrate that historical toponyms serve not only as naming units but also as important linguistic elements reflecting a people's historical memory, ethnic identity, and cultural heritage.
