It examines the key criteria for identifying discourse markers, including procedural meaning, syntactic optionality, and metadiscursive orientation. A functional classification is presented, encompassing connectors, reasoning markers, indicators of evidentiality and epistemic modality, stance markers, and interaction-regulating units. Particular attention is given to the comparative perspective through the analysis of Russian, English, and Uzbek discourse markers, highlighting both cross-linguistic equivalences and language-specific features. Using Uzbek as a case study, the article demonstrates how its agglutinative structure, grammaticalized evidentiality, and system of deictic particles influence the inventory and functioning of discourse units.
