K. ROWLING, J. R. R. TOLKIEN, AND D. A. YEMETS Абдураманова, Диана Introduction. This article examines the intertextual functions of proper names in the fictional worlds of J. K. Rowling, J. R. R. Tolkien, and D. A. Yemets. Based on the analysis of fantasy literature, the study demonstrates that proper names perform not only nominative but also meaning-making, symbolic, mythopoetic, and parodic-intertextual functions. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which character names, toponyms, and the names of fictional settings connect fantasy texts with mythological, folkloric, epic, literary, and linguistic traditions. In J. K. Rowling’s works, proper names primarily reveal the hidden semantics of characters and their cultural implications; in J. R. R. Tolkien’s writings, they are integrated into the mytho-epic and language-creating system of Middle-earth; while in D. A. Yemets’s novels, they serve as a means of parodic transformation of precedent names and literary images.
