%X The article explores the cultural identity of the Karakalpak people through two interconnected lenses: the mythological tradition surrounding the origin of the ethnonym 'Karakalpak' and its artistic representation in Tolepbergen Kayipbergenov's novel-essay 'Letters to the Other World, Grandfather' (1992). Myth and literature are analysed as two interrelated layers of a single cultural memory of the people.
