abstract: The article analyses one of the central problems of literary translation – the preservation of the figurative devices (tropes and stylistic figures) of the source text in the target language environment. Based on English and Uzbek material, it examines equivalence and adequacy, the rendering of national colour and realia, translation transformations and the principle of compensation.
