It examines the active role of Egdon Heath, rural labour, seasonal rhythm and machinery in Hardy’s The Return of the Native, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Far from the Madding Crowd, and compares them with the market space, zoomorphic imagery and moral symbolism of Dostmuhammad’s Bozor, Jajman, Nigoh and So‘roq. Ecocritical, hermeneutic, semiotic and close-reading methods show that Hardy presents nature as a non-human scale of time that tests individual desire, whereas Dostmuhammad uses natural and grotesque signs to expose greed, indifference and social alienation.
