The aim of this study is to develop a methodological approach to fosteringalgorithmic thinking and system modeling competencies among Computer Sciencestudents through MATLAB/Simulink-based simulation-oriented active learning. Themethodological framework draws on the principles of simulation-based learning, activelearning, problem/project-based learning, experiential learning, formative assessment, andprogressive scaffolding. The proposed methodology is implemented through fiveinterconnected stages: problem conceptualization, algorithm development, computermodeling, computational experimentation and optimization, and interpretation of resultsfollowed by project-based decision-making. Unlike approaches focused primarily on theuse of ready-made simulation models, the proposed model requires a systematictransition from problem analysis to algorithm development in MATLAB, modelconstruction in Simulink, model verification, parameter investigation, and evidence-baseddecision-making. An assessment framework has been developed that encompassesalgorithmic thinking, system modeling, computational and experimental activities, andproblem-solving. The proposed approach makes it possible to view MATLAB/Simulinknot merely as a software package for performing calculations but as an integrated digitalenvironment for developing the professional competencies of students in IT-related fields.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-08-14</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mods:mods>
