It analyzes the earliest forms of the ethnonym, its pronunciation and spelling variants in different languages, as well as its semantic changes. The form “tu-jue” recorded in Chinese chronicles, “türk” found in Sogdian documents, and “türük” attested in Old Turkic runic inscriptions are compared to identify their common roots and distinctive features. The article evaluates scholarly hypotheses linking the ethnonym to such meanings as “power,” “strength,” “to create,” and “leader.” It also examines how the ethnonym changed according to regional and historical contexts. date: 2026-01-01 date_type: published id_number: OJS:2324 full_text_status: none publication: Scientific and innovative research in the social and humanitarian sphere volume: 3 number: 8 pagerange: 116-118 refereed: 1 issn: 3060-5059 citation: Toshniyozov, Abbos (2026) ETYMOLOGY OF THE TURKIC ETHNONYM: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CHINESE, SOGDIAN AND TURKIC SOURCES.
