SOMERSET MAUGHAM’S “RAIN” creator: Yaxshieva, Zulfizar description: This article examines the mechanism of metaphorical meaning formation, the semantic relationship between literal and figurative meanings, and the functional potential of metaphor in the organization of literary discourse, based on W. Somerset Maugham’s short story “Rain.” Particular attention is paid to the semantic development of the lexeme rain from its denotative meaning to contextual, figurative, and conceptual meanings. Metaphorical units are analyzed not as isolated stylistic phenomena but as a discursive mechanism that shapes the macrostructure of the text, the psychological states of the characters, moral conflicts, and the author’s conceptual framework. The study employs contextual-semantic, componential, linguopoetic, discourse, conceptual, and interpretative methods of analysis. The image of rain not only defines the spatial setting of the events but also activates meanings associated with psychological pressure, emotional tension, control, desire, moral judgment, and inner crisis. The study further establishes that conceptual oppositions such as external/internal, judgment/truth, faith/desire, and power/powerlessness play an important role in the expansion of metaphorical semantics. The findings demonstrate that metaphor in literary texts functions not merely as a type of semantic transfer or a means of imagery, but as a cognitive-discursive mechanism that ensures the semantic and conceptual coherence of the text. date: 2026-01-01 type: Article type: NonPeerReviewed identifier: Yaxshieva, Zulfizar (2026) THE SEMANTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERAL AND FIGURATIVE MEANINGS IN METAPHOR: A CASE STUDY OF W.
