Particular attention is paid to how memory functions in literary texts not only as a means of engaging with the past but also as a mechanism for forming, preserving, and transforming the subject’s perception of the self. The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach combining the perspectives of memory studies, narratology, trauma studies, and identity theory. Drawing on the works of Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Pat Barker, and Zadie Smith, the article explores various models of interaction between memory and identity, including personal and autobiographical memory, traumatic memory, war and historical memory, and migratory and cultural memory. Particular attention is given to literary strategies through which the past is reconstructed in the present, including retrospective narration, fragmentation, silence, repetition, shifts in perspective, unreliable narration, and metanarrative reflection. The study argues that contemporary English literature rejects the notion of identity as a stable and complete category. Instead, identity emerges as a construct that is continuously shaped through the interaction of memory, forgetting, personal experience, historical context, and narrative interpretation. The findings demonstrate that traumatic experience can disrupt the continuity of autobiographical memory, while its subsequent narrative reconstruction may become a means of reinterpreting the self. At the same time, the analysis shows that memory does not always lead to the restoration of a coherent identity; in some works, it preserves a state of uncertainty, internal conflict, or multiplicity. date: 2026-01-01 date_type: published id_number: OJS:2333 full_text_status: public publication: Scientific and innovative research in the social and humanitarian sphere volume: 3 number: 8 pagerange: 308-312 refereed: 1 issn: 3060-5059 citation: Султонова, Лолахон (2026) THE REPRESENTATION OF PERSONAL MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH LITERATURE.
