The study aims to determine the significance of the Byzantine frontier in the military policy of the Abbasid Caliphate and to assess the role of military commanders from Transoxiana in the Abbasid army. A notable example is the career of Afshin Haydar ibn Kawus, who originated from the region of Ustrushana, located between Samarkand and Khujand. During the campaign of 838, Afshin commanded one of the Abbasid army contingents and played an important role in military operations against the Byzantine emperor Theophilos. The source base of the article includes the accounts of al-Tabari, J. B. Bury’s study of al-Mu‘tasim’s route through Cappadocia, the works of H. Kennedy, W. Treadgold, and J. Signes Codoñer, as well as specialized studies on the Khurramites and Afshin. The study concludes that the participation of commanders from Transoxiana in the Abbasid military system was not limited to ordinary military service but also involved the incorporation of representatives of the local Eastern Iranian aristocracy into the highest ranks of the caliphate’s military command.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2177"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2177_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
