title: TRANSFORMATION OF THE NATIONAL RITUALS OF THE UZBEK PEOPLE IN THE 20TH AND EARLY 21ST CENTURIES: A HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS

abstract: The article presents a historiographical analysis of studies devoted to the transformation of the national rituals of the Uzbek people in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It examines the main approaches to the study of family and domestic, wedding, birth, funeral and commemorative, calendar, and economic rituals in Soviet, post-Soviet Uzbek, and foreign historiography. The study demonstrates that scholarly approaches to traditional rituals changed depending on the socio-political and methodological context. In Soviet ethnography, transformations of ritual practices were predominantly interpreted within the concepts of the “new way of life,” the elimination of religious survivals, and the formation of socialist rituals. Following Uzbekistan’s independence, scholarly attention shifted toward historical continuity, ethnocultural identity, religious beliefs, local specificities, and the revival of traditional cultural elements. In contemporary foreign historiography, the transformation of ritual practices is analyzed through the perspectives of traditionalization, social modernization, legal pluralism, consumer culture, state regulation, and changes in local social institutions. Particular attention is given to studies based on materials from the Fergana Valley. The analysis demonstrates that, despite a substantial body of research devoted to individual types of rituals, a comprehensive historical reconstruction of their transformation throughout the Soviet and post-Soviet periods remains insufficiently developed.
