The material comprises phraseological units, a paremiological expression, a song line, a designation for a category of guests, and formulas of speech etiquette. Four outcomes in translating such units are identified: omission of a misunderstood fragment, expansion through the introduction of information absent from the original, a successful translation accompanied by an erroneous note, and preservation of the verbal form with loss of its function. The study substantiates the concept of a limit to literal translation, which is reached when the preserved verbal form ceases to retain the function of the unit within the work as a whole. Each unit was examined against an explanatory dictionary of the Uzbek language, a Russian-language dictionary, and the context of the relevant episode, with particular attention to information added to the translation beyond the original or omitted from it. Footnotes were also separately checked for their correspondence to the words they were intended to explain. The analysis identifies a case in which a successful textual translation is undermined by an error in the reference apparatus of the same edition. The practical significance of the study lies in the proposed criterion for distinguishing cases in which literal rendering is permissible from those in which it is inappropriate. The findings may be applied when revising the reference apparatus of new editions of Uzbek classical literature.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2198"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2198_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
