The analysis proceeds from the concept of a double temporal distance separating the contemporary reader from the events depicted in the novel. Three types of translation loss are identified: the substitution of an equivalent without regard to the speech situation, the chronologically incompatible replacement of the name of a monetary unit, and the omission of descriptive modifiers in representations of a fortress, guards, and palace interiors. The article also examines the rendering of social hierarchy in an episode involving a slave’s visit to a wealthy nobleman and the representation of family relations through terms carrying legal meanings. It argues that a selected equivalent should be verified according to three criteria: dictionary meaning, the speaker’s communicative intention, and chronological appropriateness. Each equivalent is examined in terms of its dictionary meaning in both languages, the speaker’s communicative purpose, and the historical period in which the designated referent was in use. The placement of the author’s explanations in the translations is compared with their position in the original. The analysis demonstrates that relocating an explanation changes the progression of an episode and shifts the semantic emphasis from nationally specific content to everyday detail. The practical significance of the study lies in the proposed three-stage procedure for verifying equivalents, which can be applied in preparing new translations of historical prose.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2220"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2220_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
