It examines the interrelationship between documentary sources, real historical events and figures, and the writer’s artistic imagination, principles of plot construction, and character creation. The article argues that the incorporation of historical facts into a literary text is not a simple retelling of events but a process of reinterpretation based on the author’s conception, the spirit of the historical period, and narrative strategy. Drawing on the tradition of Walter Scott, G. Lukács’s views on historical truth and typicality, as well as the theoretical approaches of B. G. Reizov and A. Fleishman to the criteria of historicism, the study examines the functional role of fact and fiction in the poetics of the historical novel. It also demonstrates that artistic fiction is not a means of distorting historical reality but a poetic mechanism that enables an artistic understanding of the internal logic of a historical period, its social contradictions, and human destinies. Consequently, the reliability of historical fact and the aesthetic freedom of artistic fiction are interpreted as interrelated categories that ensure the distinctive poetic integrity of the historical novel as a genre.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2256"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2256_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
