Dervishes originated among ordinary people, and their primary role was to introduce members of society to the principles and etiquette of the tariqa, guide them toward the right path, and encourage them to work and live for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. In society, dervishes were regarded as advocates of such moral virtues as modesty, humility, gentleness, kindness, and self-effacement.
