INCOME AND EXPENDITURES OF THE POPULATION OF UZBEKISTAN IN THE 1960S–1980S: A HISTORICAL AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS (THE CASE OF SURKHANDARYA REGION)
This article analyzes the socio-economic life of the population of the Surkhandarya region in the 1960s–1980s, with particular emphasis on structural changes in household income and expenditures. The period under study coincided with the stagnation of the former Soviet economy and, at the same time, with the intensive modernization of agriculture. Based on statistical data, the article examines the impact of cotton monoculture on the welfare of the region’s population, wage dynamics, sources of income among collective farm workers, and the formation of the consumer basket. It also analyzes the share of food and non-food products in household expenditures, the role of social services, and housing conditions. The findings indicate that, despite the nominal growth of incomes, real purchasing power was constrained by commodity shortages and the artificial maintenance of prices. The study also establishes that the specific agrarian characteristics of the Surkhandarya region increased the importance of personal subsidiary farms in the structure of household expenditures and the satisfaction of household needs.",
