The functions of generative AI in academic writing are analyzed in relation to planning, idea generation, academic text development, grammatical and lexical analysis, idea refinement, working with scholarly sources, and reflective revision. The article also examines potential problems arising from uncontrolled or excessive reliance on generative AI tools, including violations of academic integrity, plagiarism, appropriation of AI-generated texts, the use of unverified sources, ambiguity concerning authorship, and limitations on independent thinking. A methodological approach is proposed in which generative AI is used not as a “text generator” but as a “pedagogical support tool” for developing students’ English academic writing competence. This approach involves training students to construct prompts, critically evaluate AI-generated responses, independently verify scholarly sources, disclose the use of AI tools, and document the academic writing process step by step. The study establishes the theoretical foundations for developing a didactic-methodological model that integrates the development of English academic writing competence with the maintenance of academic integrity in the use of generative artificial intelligence technologies.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2342"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2342_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
