K. Tolstoy’s novel Prince Serebryany: A Tale of the Times of Ivan the Terrible, not merely as a thematic feature accompanying the plot but as a fundamental principle defining the genre of historical narrative. An analysis of the novel’s plot and compositional structure, its system of characters, and the history of critical interpretations of Nikita Serebryany demonstrates that the work’s multilayered and polyphonic plot is structured around the continuous testing of the ideals of loyalty, self-sacrifice, and adherence to the law. Furthermore, the widely held interpretation, dating back to M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, of the protagonist as a psychologically “one-dimensional” character requires clarification: Serebryany’s relative psychological simplicity is not an artistic shortcoming but rather a deliberate outcome of a genre strategy aimed at constructing a generalized national archetype. The study draws on theories of the historical novel (G. Lukács, S. M. Petrov, B. G. Reizov, A. S. Nemzer) and methods of comparative-typological analysis.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2507"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2507_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
