The study is based on such criteria as the roles of participants in a communicative situation, argument reversal, the direction of speech acts, and presuppositional relationships. The analysis demonstrates that the verbs ask and answer cannot be fully equated with strict converse pairs of the classical buy–sell type, since the act of asking a question does not logically entail the occurrence of an answering act. At the same time, the use of the verb answer presupposes the existence of a preceding question or request. Consequently, the study proposes describing these lexical units as verbs exhibiting features of functional opposition and communicative converseness. %A Ziyodaxon Mamatova %R OJS:2691 %T CONVERSE RELATIONS BETWEEN VERBS OF ASKING AND ANSWERING IN ENGLISH %D 2026 %J Scientific and innovative research in the social and humanitarian sphere
