TY - JOUR SP - 87 A1 - Boboyeva, Madina EP - 91 N2 - The article presents a comparative analysis of how human social status, financial resources, spheres of influence, and power relations within society are represented in the phraseological systems of English and Uzbek, based on authentic textual materials. The study focuses on Uzbek somatic phraseological units such as qo?li uzun (literally ?long hand,? denoting influence) and qo?li kalta (literally ?short hand,? denoting limited opportunities), as well as English expressions such as born with a silver spoon in one?s mouth, upper crust, big cheese, top dog, climb the social ladder, from rags to riches, down and out, and live from hand to mouth. The analysis demonstrates that social status in phraseology is not limited to the designation of wealth or poverty; it also figuratively represents relationships involving access to resources, decision-making capacity, influence over others, upward social mobility, and social vulnerability. While the qo?l (?hand?) component is particularly productive in Uzbek texts in expressing the relationship between ?opportunity and influence,? English phraseology predominantly relies on imagery associated with material objects, vertical space, and social hierarchy.
