They possessed extensive knowledge of Islam and its religious prescriptions and strictly adhered to them in all spheres of activity. However, significant changes occurred in the country’s sociopolitical life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The ulama of Bukhara became divided into the Qadimists, who supported traditional values, and the Jadids, who sought to reform society. The Qadimists regarded any changes in society as contrary to Islam and the established order, striving to preserve traditional practices in state administration, the education system, and almost all spheres of public life. In contrast, the Jadids aimed to purify Islam of superstitions, adapt schools and madrasas to contemporary requirements, implement reforms necessary for social development, and advance the nation through education and knowledge. The article examines the contradictions and ideological struggle between these two groups of ulama through the examples of Muhammad Ikrom ibn Abdussalom Bukhari, who advocated new-method schools and the religious and legal foundations of reforms, as well as Mufti Abdurazzoq, the leader of conservative ulama who regarded any innovation as bid‘ah, and Mullah Qamariddin, a teacher at a madrasa. The study highlights the complex political processes that accompanied the transition from traditionalism toward modernization in the Emirate of Bukhara.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2026-01-01</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_2632"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_2632_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
