Маканина как произведение новейшей военной прозы, переосмысляющее традиционный мотив «кавказского пленника». В центре внимания — мотив красоты, который в условиях войны утрачивает спасительную функцию и становится формой нравственного испытания. Показано, что способность героя видеть красоту природы и пленного юноши не предотвращает насилие, а делает выбор осознанным и трагически ответственным.
