В исследовании в первую очередь сравниваются арабский оригинал, английские научные издания Х. Гибба и других исследователей, а также современные работы, посвященные путешествиям Ибн Баттуты. В статье рассматриваются описания денежного обращения в различных регионах в «Путешествиях» Ибн Баттуты («Тухфат ан-Нуззар фи гараиб ал-амсар ва ажаиб ал-асфар»), с акцентом на его путешествия в Трансоксиану, Индию, Китай и Западную Африку (Мали). Он выделяет отличительные черты металлических монет, бумажных денег, золотого песка, соли и обменных отношений, используя в качестве примеров свои путешествия в Трансоксиану, Индию, Китай и страны Западной Африки (Мали).
