Отправляясь в поисках знаний в такие крупные центры науки, как Хива и Бухара, поэт сталкивается не только с физическими трудностями, но и с горечью разлуки с близкими и семьей. Если в таких эпосах, как “Алпамыш” или “Гороглы”, героические походы в основном направлены против внешних врагов, то в поэзии Махтумкули этот мотив возносится до уровня глубоких личных переживаний и ирфонических (мистических) поисков. В его творчестве понятие странствия служит духовному возвышению и воспитанию человеческого эго (нафса).
