LINGUOPOETIC FEATURES OF FIGURATIVE DEVICES IN THE WORK “AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY” (ANALYSIS OF EPITHET, METAPHOR, SIMILE, AND PARALLELISM)

The article analyzes the linguopoetic features of stylistic devices used in the novel “An American Tragedy” by Theodore Dreiser. The study focuses on the functional role of epithet, metaphor, simile, and parallel constructions within the narrative structure of the work. These stylistic devices are examined from semantic and linguopoetic perspectives, revealing their significance in portraying the psychological state of the protagonist and reflecting the social environment. The research employs linguopoetic, semantic, and contextual analysis methods. The findings indicate that epithets enhance evaluative meanings and help depict the social conditions surrounding the character. Metaphors conceptually express the hierarchical structure of society and the social determinism influencing individual fate. Similes convey the emotional experiences of the protagonist, intensifying narrative dramatism. Parallel syntactic constructions emphasize internal conflicts and highlight differences between social strata.
