SOME METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF "NATION" IN CONTEMPORARY WESTERN EUROPEAN STUDIES

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the concept of “nation” in contemporary Western European scholarship, focusing on its essence, theoretical interpretations, and methodological approaches. Particular attention is given to constructivist and instrumentalist perspectives, within which the nation is interpreted as an “imagined community.” The study examines the role of socio-economic, political, and cultural factors in the formation of national identity. Drawing on the works of P. Berger, T. Luckmann, F. Barth, E. Gellner, and B. Anderson, the article explores modern theoretical approaches to understanding the phenomenon of the nation. It also substantiates the relationship between nation formation and processes of industrialization and modernization, emphasizing the subjective and constructed nature of ethnic identity. Furthermore, the paper clarifies the evolution of the concept of nation within contemporary academic discourse and its significance in the social sciences and humanities.
