SOCIO-PRAGMATIC REALIZATION OF MITIGATION STRATEGIES ACROSS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DISCOURSE

This article provides a systematic analysis of the socio-pragmatic and linguoculturalcharacteristics of mitigation strategies across different types of discourse, including formal diplomatic,informal everyday, and literary discourse. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study examines 300pragmatic contexts collected over a five-year period. The findings demonstrate that the selection and useof mitigation strategies are directly influenced by social hierarchy, gender factors, and the degree ofcontextual formality. In diplomatic discourse, indirect speech acts and modal softeners are predominantly employed, whereas in informal communication, social status and gender play a significant role indetermining the intensity of mitigation. The article also explores linguocultural challenges associated withtranslating culture-specific mitigation devices between Uzbek and English and evaluates their degree ofpragmatic equivalence. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of mitigation mechanisms indiscourse studies, pragmatics, and translation research.
