INTONATION AND PRAGMATICS IN THE UZBEK LANGUAGE

This article examines the relationship between intonation and pragmatics using data from the Uzbek language, an agglutinative member of the Turkic language family. It reviews the theoretical foundations of the topic, including J. L. Austin’s and J. R. Searle’s Speech Act Theory, H. P. Grice’s Cooperative Principle, and the concepts of prosodic pragmatics and discourse linguistics. The study argues that intonation performs a distinctive pragmatic function in Uzbek due to the language’s structural and typological characteristics, including its relatively fixed word order, highly developed agglutinative morphology, and the cultural tradition of indirect speech behavior. The principal pragmatic functions of intonation are systematized as illocutionary-constitutive, implicature-related, focus-marking, discourse-organizing, and emotive-expressive. The paper also proposes directions for future empirical research.
