Abstract

This article examines the nature of early medieval Arabic khitaba as a literary genre and addresses the issue of its authenticity and indigenous origins. European views that deny khitaba the status of a literary genre, as well as hypotheses concerning the influence of Greco-Roman rhetoric or Hellenistic culture on Arabic khitaba, are critically analyzed. The study argues that khitaba developed not under foreign cultural influence but as a product of indigenous Arabic literary and artistic thought.
